Saltire Society Commendation Award 2001
This project involved the construction of 104 rented units and
30 houses for sale in three phases using a partnership contract
with Lovell Construction Ltd.
The development required a high level of engineering
input which included major reorganisation of the site infrastructure
(e.g. replacement of 3 electrical substations), remodeling of
the steep site contours to form barrier-free access, and a variety
of foundation solutions to meet with particular characteristics
of each area of the site. This included the use of deep trench,
vibrocompaction and traditional piling. All were constructed
in timber frame. The five storey timber frame construction was
however designed to minimise shrinkage and incorporate disproportionate
collapse protection. |

|
This project comprised
the demolition of over 300 1930's tenemental properties and
the provision of 163 two storey houses and infrastructure works
in 4 phases of development over a period of 5 years. J B Bennett
(Contractors) were awarded the first phase of works after winning
a competitive tender submission and then went on to secure the
remaining phases by a negotiated partnership route. In addition
to committing to a high degree of benchmarking to achieve high
standards of workmanship, tight time controls and low defects,
the house design continued to improve on ventilation, insulation
and general specification quality as the scheme progressed -
all within the cost controls imposed by Scottish Homes. The
engineering works included the consolidation of a mine shaft
within the site boundaries and contamination remediation in
the form of the capping layer. |

the associated infrastructure work including a new sub-station
and main sewer network. This also involved a major earthworks
operation involving the placing of approximately 9000m3 of crushed

Residential Development for King Homes and Stewart Milne Homes

|
|
This project provides some 186 units in a mix
of apartments ranging from 3 to 6 storey. Ground conditions
on site have necessitated the use of piling and vibro-compaction
to provide suitable transfer to load bearing strata. New buildings
are being constructed in close proximity to existing tenements
with the need for extensive temporary works. A further feature
of the design was the requirement for onsite attenuation of
surface water which has led to the introduction of below-ground
structures to form attenuation tanks. Considerable offsite works
are also being provided to improve the surrounding road network.
