Pressac Systems, Bishopbriggs (£4.6m) [ top ]

This project comprised of 10,000m2 of accommodation 1,000m2 was office. The structure comprises large span portal frames on mass concrete foundation.

Of particular note was the ground conditions and drainage infrastructure on site. Firstly, the ground was contaminated due to an old cement works with trapped layers of topsoil at 2m depth and concrete washings causing leachate and perched water table problems.

The site also had a fall of 3m across its width. The result was significant earthworks to eradicate contamination by removal and encapsulation. The drainage from the site had to be dealt with separately, with the foul being pumped some 2km away. The surface water connected to a controlled watercourse and an attenuation ditch was provided to ensure post development flows matched pre-development flows.

Oceaneering Multiflex, Rosyth (£4.2m) [ top ]

This project comprised of 20,000m2 of accommodation, 1,500m2 being offices. The building is 16m high and utilises large span portal with a central spine girder on piled foundations. Large plant foundations and pits were accommodated both within the building and externally which were independently piled.

The site is heavily contaminated with significant amounts of landfill gases. As a result, encapsulation and vented gas membrane below the building was provided. To prevent leachate to the River Forth, a bentonite slurry wall was provided to the perimeter of the site.

P C Morris – Fish Processing Factory (£1.0m) [ top ]

This project comprised 200m2 of chilled production area and associated offices. The structure comprises steel portal frames supported on vibrocompacted foundations and incorporates a fully glazed feature entrance staircase.

Nexfor, Cowie – MDF3 Expansion (£53m) [ top ]

This project delivered a new MDF production line, and involved the construction of 60,000m2 of manufacturing building, as well as numerous alterations to other buildings on the plant and associated civils work.

A particular feature was the anchorage of a 60m high tower and formation of large press pit to exacting tolerances.

The project involved a multi national team of designers that included Canadian, Swedish, German and British Engineers.

Almond Engineering, Livingston (£1.2m) [ top ]

This project delivered 30,000m2 of accommodation, 8,000m2 of which was office. The structure utilises a steel frame on pad foundation with concrete ground bearing slab. A detailed study of both shale and coal mining records was carried out, with significant proving surveys on site to establish the possible presence of below-ground workings. This resulted in the final location of the building being positioned outwith the zone of likely influence.

Production Facility for Eness Lighting Systems, Kirkcaldy (£1.2M) [ top ]

This project involved the development of a purpose-built unit for the client. The structure utilises portal frames on pad foundation. Particular successes included developing the design around major sewers, and the application of a robust SUDS solution on a steeply sloping site.
